We’ve just passed the Cold Moon, which represents a time for stillness and conserving energy, but I find as I get older, I do this naturally more often and in many circumstances. On Black Friday, I was doing a signing along with my husband at a local bookstore. One of my books is a memoir that I co-authored with my eldest, Finn, about living with clinical obsessive-compulsive disorder and intrusive thoughts. It’s called You’re Not a Murderer: You Just Have Harm OCD. One lady picked up the book and told me she thinks the disorder is more common because this generation is so entitled. I explained to her that the OCD brain and neurotypical brain look different on a scan, often thicker in some places and thinner in others, that Finn’s life was a living torment when this was at its worst, and that the intrusive thoughts were terrifying. I can also tell you that’s not why I had it and certainly not why my grandfather had it; he was born in 1907! She simply reiterated her earlier assessment. To my surprise, I didn’t become angry or upset. Yes, I’m used to people stereotyping OCD and thinking it is a neatness disorder, but this was a blatant step beyond misunderstanding, and yet…stillness. Yep, I’m as surprised as you are! Right?! Reiki masters are as human as anyone and when you’ve seen a loved one suffer so much, this kind of callousness can be tough. I handed her a postcard explaining OCD and intrusive thoughts and smiled. She bought my husband’s book and left.
Y’all, I don’t know if all the meditation is finally paying off or if I’ve at last learned to surrender these people/situations to God, the Universe, however you see that, but I do know that I wish her love and understanding. When she is surrounded by love, she will either understand or seek to understand. Sending her out the door with negative energy in tow wouldn’t have brought her any closer to understanding. I wish you love, dear lady.

Mineral of the Month: Selenite

Properties: Selenite is all about the cleansing! It cleans stagnant energy from places, people, and other crystals. Some people even place a bit of selenite over their door frames so that others will feel a sense of calm upon entering and negative energy will be dispelled from the start. Why not?
Connection to spirit: Selene is a derivation of the Greek word for “moon.” Thus, we turn to selenite for spiritual illumination.
Meditation: Selenite is believed to help open the crown chakra.
Mental Clarity: Selenite can help clear confusion, put things in perspective, and allow one to see the bigger picture.
Essential Oil of the Month: Frankincense

Origin: Frankincense is distilled from the resin of the Boswellia tree. It has a warm and woody smell reminiscent of a walk deep in the forest.
Aromatherapy: People report feeling calm and grounded while using this oil. A few drops in a diffuser during meditation works well. Note: It can also be burned in resin form (pictured left).
Topical use: Great for inflammation! Reported helpful for arthritis. Note: Always use a carrier oil. Add a few drops to jojoba oil, sesame, or other neutral smelling oil if using topically.
Digging Deeper: Using frankincense on the third eye (located just above the eyebrows, center) during meditation can help you get into a deeper space of meditation or prayer. After all, scents correlate with certain brain waves just like sounds and colors do.
Until next time,
Love, Mercy, and Light
