I’m often asked what Reiki feels like from the perspective of the practitioner, and I would say that it’s as unique as you are! The energy flows differently for every individual. The energy may be “universal,” but you are unique. When I begin a session and ask the Reiki energy to flow, I feel the energy surge through my body, and it feels different for every person. In fact, in most instances, it tends to mirror the individual’s personality or what the individual needs. For example, when I am practicing Reiki on someone with a lot of natural “up” energy, think snap, crackle, and pop, I tend to get energy flowing through my body like a ping pong ball, and I know I need to breathe slow and mellow and send calming energy. With another person, I may approach the table, ask the Reiki to flow, and I receive a mirror of their energy that feels like the brush of feathers. Everyone is different.
Once the Reiki begins, I may feel a build up of energy while on the crown chakra that seems to build, build, build, then release, only to be told afterwards that the person suffers from migraines, anxiety, or has been deeply worried about something. This can happen anywhere in the body that has a build up of stagnant energy.
I’ve also had what I call the “Duck, Duck, GOOSE!” experience, where I’m doing the hand positions on an individual and the Reiki is flowing, of course, but I get nothing specific (which is also okay because, again, Reiki is always flowing during a session), then BAM! Goose! I feel what I call an energy loop where my hands seem almost stuck and they may often tingle, generate extra heat, or feel as if they are sinking into the skin and through the body. I feel that I’m supposed to stay there. There’s an issue, even if the client didn’t mention it. I’ll give this area a few more minutes or until the energy dissipates. Reiki is always tailored to the individual and always knows where to go.
The Reiki experience is different for every practitioner. Some practitioners may not ever feel the surges of energy that I do and may be extraordinary practitioners! The energy could present in a different way. Perhaps their primary energy tell is tingling, heat, or something else. Just as every client won’t perceive Reiki the same way, nor will every practitioner, and that’s perfectly fine.
It’s an experience as unique as you.
